It's interesting when I read this now in 2011 I don't think much about the fact that he was gone because I know the whole story. But if I were with them back then oh how awesome that must have been. Realizing what he said was coming true but not even fully knowing the full implications of that

Wow. Spot on for where I am today. Consider everything else garbage, losing everything for Him. What a struggle I put up trying to be in control of my own life, keep hold of my own stuff, when Christ is begging to take control.

I recommend reading this post that is along the same lines: http://www.internetmonk.com/archive/surrendering-to-his-teeth. It's from Internet Monk and is called "Surrendering to His Teeth." I'm finding myself in need of God's teeth.

"You are righteous"
"The statutes you have laid down are righteous"
"Your promises have been fully tested"

"I am lowly and despised"

"But your commands give me delight"

Proper orientation to God + Proper orientation to self = JOY

It's interesting, this whole last week has been really stressful. With the semester coming to a close at school, being in charge of a "fun" day, all sorts of other things... I find myself today not really feeling like calling on the name of the LORD. Now, if He were to first revive me, then I would not turn away, then I would call. This verse speaks to me, we need to call upon the LORD, but we need Him for so many other things too!

So much in one little verse. These beautiful verses are the reasons I love the Psalms. So much emotion (that captures how I often feel) in so few words.

I need to practice stillness much more as a spiritual discipline. Monday's reading raised questions, and then every reading since has had a sense that "answers" come in waiting.

What a brilliant poem for this morning! What just pops off the page to me is the number of times the LORD is referenced in comparison to the "princes" who we are tempted to trust. There are 18 references to God, 3 to those "humans." The focus of our life must be God. How simple, how I forget it.

Over and over again in the Scriptures, God calls us to hope. I find that pretty amazing, here in the midst of the siege of Jerusalem, God is calling for the people to hope.

Interesting that yesterday we talked about entering into the Father's joy, and here is a passage that longs for tears and weeping over the people. Perhaps a complex message of Scripture is the merging of God's emotions with our own - that our heart breaks and weeps with God over the pain and suffering in the world but also experiences the overwhelming joy of the kingdom too, when God works to redeem these situations.

Thanks, Andy for sharing this via Twitter. I'll try to follow along.

Though this is a short passage, it does contain at least one good insight. Even though Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous and blameless in the eyes of God, they were not able to have children. "Bad things" happen to good people and we need to continue to have faith through trying times. Of course, we know that they will soon be blessed for their faithfulness. In this vain, one of my personal favorite verses is Jer 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

I notice that even when I am distant from God, and I can't imagine His love, this passage says that His love is everlasting, and that some of the close and intimate experiences of worship and blessing will happen again. I can remember those worship and blessing experiences (my fast and my son, to name two huge ones!) I can take hope that in God's love, even as I feel distant, that worship and blessing and interaction is coming again!

Interesting thoughts Ben, nice to induce you into a post by throwing the ever controversial "antichrists" out there.

I think it would do us good to think about our own opinions and actions in terms of "antichrist." Because, we do things that are the opposite of Christ, or as Ben said, we have beliefs, people or habits that we put in Christ's place, hence they are antichrists.

I liken idols to antichrist(s). As many things can be idols, many things can be antichrists. If you think of something as being anit-christ, personify it as an antichrist, and you have given the enemies work a face.

This may sound strange, but it is easier to hate a person that a thing or idea, for me. I think this is why the evil must have a being, a person, a face. If evil were not rooted in a being, such as Satan, and it was simply a force, it would be much harder to combat it(him).

This is why the US War on Terror is an emanate failure by its very nature. One can't fight and eradicate a force, because that force. One can however battle and eliminate a being, an entity,or person.

As Christians, or battle is with evil, but it is winnable because it is really with Satan and his hoard. When God has his way and banishes them forever, then too evil will be eliminated. So we must focus our spiritual war strength on Satan... different from the way a New Ager would think of battling evil.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12

Two parables about prayer, one on humility and one on persistance. Two things I continually lack in prayer? Humility and persistance. And then I wonder why my relationship from God can seem distant?

I am finding that the attentiveness that God requires from his disciples is difficult to keep in modern life. Certainly without set aside times of stillness, it is hard to remember the things I'm learning, let alone put them into practice. Like, who has time to keep a matter before the LORD day and night, night and day; unless it is something that is truly life threatening or destructive to family? Honestly, I have trouble keeping Exodus or family or whatever that is not urgent in prayer.

Prayer is a difficult root for me. If I am trying to follow Christ more closely, this is a practical place to start I guess.

While all of that is indeed true, God also told us that he would pour us out blessings that we wont have room enough to recieve. He chose David to be King. He blessed Job with even more then he had previous. He caused Joesph to be sold into slavery, only to become second in command of all of Eygpt. Therefore being rich is not the sin or sinful, God wants his ppl to prosper! All of his promises are yes and Amen. He is the Lord of my life, health, and finances. They are belong to Him!

The rich thing is definitely something that we're going to have to try to break down when we do our study of Luke, for example, what do you do with this from Luke 6:

"But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort."

Or this from Mary's song:

"He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty."

Luke (and James for that matter) often state things in a matter of fact way that make it seem as if being rich is wrong, period. Perhaps this is poetic hyperbole (I mean, Jesus even uses that at times) but it certainly requires more study. I'm looking forward to it!

"...compel them to come in, so that my house will be full."

So is God just waiting for heaven to fill up?

This one is very interesting to me. I love food. Free banquet? I'm in. You don't have to compel me. Yet those invited don't come, and even the people out on the street have to be compelled. It's not like he's trying to sell them a time-share or something!

And yet, how often do I make the same excuses? Often enough I'm sure. Priorities, priorities, priorities.

It must be possible. Abraham, Job, David, and Solomon all had more than their share of wealth. And what's more, that wealth is often attributed to the blessing of God upon them.

I'm not tryin' to get all Joel Osteen... just picking apart what's there.

I find the line "all kinds of greed" to be very interesting. Jesus then follows it up talking about possessions, so that gives me the impression that the "all types" doesn't mean with things other than wealth, but rather the "all types" of excuses that we have to justify our wealth. I can think of lots of reasons to store up my surplus, but maybe all of those reasons are "all types of greed."

I've never really noticed the last phrase, "...but are not rich toward God." That's an interesting way of putting it. Kind of backs up the idea that it's OK to be rich, as long as you're not being self-centered and greedy.

I also like Jesus' initial response. That's about as close as Jesus gets to a WTF? moment. Then he moves right on to "here's what the real problem is..." Jesus always has a great way of condensing the nonsense. I love it.

I love 119, this sucker is heavily quoted.
The flow of this is unique. I love the question at the begining, and how when average joe reads this, it registers. It's a real dilemma, because speaking as a young person, purity is far from easy and much nearer to impossible, or so it seems.
And then the obvious truth is stated, life by the word creates purity. But my absolute favorite part of all this is "do not let me stray from your commands" because i read it as a plea acknowledging my own powerlessness over the situation.... it's saying God use your power to keep me from straying, I can't do this without you, empower me, have your spirit guide me, ect. It's as if God is your drivers ed instructor, and he has a break too, and I'm provoking him to use it, to save me, to keep me from forgetting to break myself and ruin my life.

That's really perceptive Andy. Hadn't really thought about it, but that seems to apply to so many things in my life. When I finally realize that it is God that is speaking to me, I look back and think how silly I've been to not perceive His voice all along.

It seems like after reading the extended passage that sometimes we hear but we don't realize who it is that is even talking to us. That we need to be connected to other stronger followers who know what the voice sounds like in order to discern that it truly is the voice of the Lord.

Eek! I'm a couple days behind in posting but this passage has stuck with me since reading it on Wednesday.

I have read John 17 a number of times but this time I was amazed at the parallels between Jesus' relationship with the disciples and my relationship with my children. It says a couple of times, "I have given them..." It really got me wondering just what exactly am I "giving" my children? Do they see me daily humbling myself before the Lord? Do they know that my strength is His strength? How am I preparing a godly heritage for my children and their children and their children?

Because of this passage, I am committed to praying more diligently, more earnestly for my children.

Yea, the "far be it from you" is what stuck out to me as well. He's challenging God with God's very own nature and character. I guess that's what God gets for being unchangable.

I thought it was interesting how He told God Far be it from you. Will not the Judge of all the earth do right? it is almost like a challenge to him. Your the judge you should do right. and then he keeps asking for smaller and smaller numbers but yet God knows that even then they wont find that number. But non the less it was cool how he was praying for the people

It's amazing. In just these few lines, "your" in reference to God is used 11 times. One thing that has been shown to me this week is how prayer is couched in reference to God. Even when we are asking things for ourselves, the Bibilical language of prayer revolves around God. For the LORD's sake, the LORD's will be done, and on and on. My prayers don't do that. My prayers don't revolve around the LORD. So that's where I start.

"Our hope is in him." And apparently, that hope comes out of humility, because this passage says "Let them bury their faces in dust - there may yet be hope." Fascinating that out of an action of humble admission, there comes a strengthening hope. Is that not what we are in need of?

This is a great reminder that our "hope is in him." Nothing else can we confidently hope in but the Lord, because he never changes and his promises are true.

One thing I never noticed about the Lord's prayer is how much it is focused on God, especially this short beginning. "Our Father," "your name," "your kingdom," and "your will." Not anything exalting my wants and needs in the beginning. And then the second part is all dependence on God, "give us," "forgive us," and "lead us." Acknowledgment of our dependence, yeah, that sounds like humility to me.
